Hello my beautiful friends! After two posts traveling the world with Agatha Christie, we are back to our regular programming with this week’s version of Friday Bookish Favorites for a little inspiration for your weekend.
WHAT I AM READING
“There’s rich, there’s filthy rich, and then there’s crazy reach” (People)
This fabulous book!
“When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.
On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.” (Publisher Synopsis)
Believe me when I tell you that you if you thought you knew the lives of rich people, I think that you are going to be very surprised at how the rich people in Singapore live! It is an over the top, brilliant satire of the ultra wealthy in Asia, a peek inside a very rich and glamorous society. It is the first book of a trilogy and it is followed by China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. If you are interested in reading about Singapore’s old money royalty, extravagant descriptions of houses, estates, jewelry, clothes and generally about the lives of the Asian jet setters, you definitely have found your book! The last third of the book takes a more serious turn as it starts exploring the point of view of the spouses of rich people who may have not come from a world of money and privilege and it also deals with a more sober and serious issue. An interesting book.
THE ONE SECRET TO A HAPPY LIFE
A dear friend of mine sent me recently this article from “Inc.” titled This 75-year Harvard Study found the 1 Secret to Leading a Fulfilling Life .
It is very interesting to see how simple the secret ingredient is to lead a happy life!
SOME AGATHA CHRISTIE NEWS
“The daughter of an American millionaire dies on a train en route for Nice…
When the luxurious Blue Train arrives at Nice, a guard attempts to wake serene Ruth Kettering from her slumbers. But she will never wake again – for a heavy blow has killed her, disfiguring her features almost beyond recognition. What is more, her precious rubies are missing.
The prime suspect is Ruth’s estranged husband, Derek. Yet Poirot is not convinced, so he stages an eerie re-enactment of the journey, complete with the murderer on board…” (Publisher Synopsis)
If you are interested in reading the works of Agatha, this is a wonderful way to read her enormous collection of books one book at a time.
Secondly, this September (13-17/9) the 2017 International Agatha Christie Festival takes place in Christie’s hometown, Torquay. It has “an expansive programme of arts and culture including plenty of Agatha Christie-focused events.” Two of my favorites are: The Open Air Cinema which will show Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express and the Escape Room with clues to solve our own mystery! It will be based in the Torre Abbey Museum and it lasts five days.
Here is the full programme if you want to check it out.
This one is for my ladies readers! Sherry Petersik from the famous www.younghouselove.com blog has started a fabulous Instagram account called pinchmeimpink which is dedicated to all things…PINK! Check it out, it is so gorgeous!
WHAT I AM WATCHING
I am spending my summer with Miss Marple of course! I love all Agatha characters but I have a special fondness for Miss Marple! If you are looking for with which episode to start, may I suggest At Bertram’s Hotel? You are going to love the setting! In the words of Agatha: “traditional decor, impeccable service and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer…” Friends of the old British era will love the feeling and the atmosphere of England of the past as depicted in The Bertram’s hotel…
(Note for my Greek readers: I am watching it every weekday at ERT-1 at 16.15′).
QUOTE FOR REFLECTION
“For what it’s worth:
it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be.
I hope you live a life you’re proud of,
and if you find you’re not,
I hope you have the strength to start over again.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald
That’s it my friends! See you in September and thank you for reading!
