Hello and happy Friday! How is your summer going? As promised, here is the second part of my summer recommendations if you are interested in reading a new Agatha Christie book. If you want to see my first three recommended books (Egypt, south coast of England and Iraq), click here. So, if you are heading to your vacation or you just want to spend a lazy summer afternoon with a good mystery, keep on reading!
Let’s start with the one with the “most exotic” title…
I have already written a whole review on this book sometime ago. It is a Miss Marple mystery which takes place in Barbados. It is not one of the most complex Agatha cases, the story is simpler, nevertheless it is a cozy Miss Marple story and you are definitely going to enjoy it! If you want to read my thoughts, you can read them here.
In our next stop in our Agatha journey, we are travelling with Hercule Poirot to Petra where they have an…
“A repugnant American widow is killed during a trip to Petra…
Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sat the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist was the only sign of the fatal injection that had killed her.
With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he’d overheard back in Jerusalem: ‘You see, don’t you, that she’s got to be killed?’ Mrs Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he’d ever met…”
The victim in this story is a horrible woman who used to be the warden in a women’s jail and is still making the lives of her children miserable. It is a complex story relying heavily in the phychology of the characters in this murder mystery. The Observer has declared it …”Twice as brilliant as Death on the Nile, which was entirely brilliant”.
And then, our friends…
This is also one of her “adventure thriller” books and not so much a “murder mystery” one. In this book, our heroine, Victoria Jones, after a chance meeting with a young man in a park, decides to follow him to…Baghdad! The adventure begins and it is full of suspense: a British agent, a secret weapon, a secret summit of superpowers, an evil plan to assassinate several political figures who would be coming to Baghdad. You are going to love the cleverness and the ingenuity of our heroine. A wonderful, suspenseful story that I highly recommend and that you will, most definitely, thoroughly enjoy!
That one is very similar with one of my very favourite Agatha books which is…
“A young woman investigates an accidental death at a London tube station, and finds herself of a ship bound for South Africa…
Pretty, young Anne came to London looking for adventure. In fact, adventure comes looking for her – and finds her immediately at Hyde Park Corner tube station. Anne is present on the platform when a thin man, reeking of mothballs, loses his balance and is electrocuted on the rails.
The Scotland Yard verdict is accidental death. But Anne is not satisfied.
After all, who was the man in the brown suit who examined the body? And why did he race off, leaving a cryptic message behind: ‘17-122 Kilmorden Castle’?” (Publisher synopsis)
Oh, this book! It has everything you could possibly need in a feel-good, escapist read… It has suspense, international travel from London to South Africa, stolen diamonds, a Secret Service agent, a Russian ballerina, notes with secret codes, lots of adventure, a romance in its core and, most of all, a delightful and brave young heroine! You can say that it is more an adventure book than a murder mystery one. One of my favorite Agatha books!!!!
This is the end of my recommendations if you want to spend your summer in the company of an Agatha Christie book! Don’t forget to check out my first three recommendations here!
I hope you enjoyed my two posts and do let me now if you’ve read any of the above books! Thank you for reading and have a wonderful August!!!
