FRIDAY BOOKISH FAVORITES: The Summer with Agatha Christie edition

Friday bookish Favorites - Agatha Christie

Happy Friday my friends and welcome to

Today, I have a very special edition for you! For this week’s Friday Favorites,  I have compiled a list of my favorite Agatha Christie books that I think will be perfect for your summer reading! They are part of her “foreign travel”  books taking place in exotic locations and they will satisfy your wanderlust until your own vacation!

Let’s start with one of the most famous of her books. If you are new to her work, this is a wonderful book to start.

                                           DEATH ON THE NILE

Taking a luxurious cruise ship on the Nile

Death on the Nile - Agatha Christie at

In DEATH ON THE NILE, Hercule Poirot succeeds (as always!) to solve the murder of  Linnett Ridgeway who had almost “everything”: beauty, brains and money. The murder takes place during her honeymoon on a luxurious cruise ship on the Nile and it has everything that you would want in a beach read: Poirot, a cruise ship, Africa, a captivating plot that will have you hooked and a wonderful array of characters. If you like, you can also watch the movie starring Peter Ustinov and a very glamorous cast.

The exotic seaside mystery thriller

Evil Under the Sun (Poirot) (Hercule Poirot Series) by [Christie, Agatha] at

“It was not unusual to find the beautiful bronzed body of the sun-loving Arlena Stuart stretched out on a beach, face down. Only, on this occasion, there was no sun… she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena’s arrival at the resort, Hercule Poirot had detected sexual tension in the seaside air. But could this apparent ‘crime of passion’ have been something more evil and premeditated altogether?”  (Publisher Synopsis)

In EVIL UNDER THE SUN , we are travelling to the southern coast of England and we are vacationing in a glamorous hotel resort of the rich and famous… I absolutely adored the solution to this one! Very complex and executed perfectly.

                                           MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA

A murder mystery in the Middle East in the 1930’s

Murder in Mesopotamia -

“An archaeologist’s wife is murdered on the shores of the River Tigris in Iraq…It was clear to Amy Leatheran that something sinister was going on at the Hassanieh dig in Iraq; something associated with the presence of ‘Lovely Louise’, wife of celebrated archaeologist Dr Leidner. In a few days’ time Hercule Poirot was due to drop in at the excavation site. But with Louise suffering from terrifying hallucinations, and tension within the group becoming almost unbearable, Poirot might just be too late…” (Publisher Synopsis)

In MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA , we are travelling to Iraq (of the past) and to an archaeological excavation site which is described with enough details that almost makes you wish that you were there besides Poirot… A brilliant mystery with interesting insights in the complexities of human behavior.

This book has one of my favorite Agatha quotes which has a “political” feeling…

“In my opinion, the state of mind of a community is always directly due to the influence of the man at the top.”

Exactly after Poirot solves this murder, he takes the Orient Express to go back to his home which takes us to…

One of the most ingenious crime books ever written is Murder on the Orient Express. It had already been made into a film in 1974 and the big news is that a new movie is scheduled to be released on November 10 of this year!!! It is directed by Kenneth Branagh and the cast includes Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley.

You can watch the official trailer below.

Enjoy your weekend my friends! I hope it takes you to the beach!
